Beautiful sunny day on quiet country roads and into Amish territory

Sunny country run

Cold and sunny this morning. I knew I would get to run the whole way on quiet country roads, through suburban residential areas then farmland… nothing to worry about the size of the shoulder available for me. I would be safe the whole way.

Amish horse carriages- the local school bus

As I approached Shipshewana I knew I was entering Amish territory. Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania are the 3 most populous US states for Amish communities. And these are the three states I am crossing for the next three weeks. As I got near town, I started to notice the changes. It was school midday break time (Sunday school, reallly?). Kids were being ferried back to town not in the traditional yellow school buses. But in the black horse carriages. Young boys wore black trousers and white shirts with black suspenders and a black hat. Young girls wore wide and long grey dresses with white collar, white ribbon and a hat in their hair.

The local restaurant in Shipshewana – closed on Sunday!

I got to stay in the center of town. Alas, it being Sunday, all the restaurants and grocery stores were closed. I also found out the whole town is dry so I could not even get a beer anyway. Too bad. I got some food from the hotel’s pantry shop, in the form of a frozen pizza and frozen burger. What a pity, for a town that boasts great traditional Amish food. I had been looking forward!
