Europe

A short day to conclude the week of running, on a familiar road, leading to a special place, Astros

I left at dawn this morning, knowing it was a small day of running and I was keen to take my time. The road today would be “undulating” and very familiar. The route would be that of the “Astroman Triathlon” which I hosted in 2010-2011 from Astros, the first half-iron distance triathlon to be held in Greece.

Not even 12km into the run, a car passed by, honking and parked ahead. Giannis! The only local triathlete in the small and rural community of Astros – and the only local to have completed a ½ ironman (that of Astros). He had volunteered to help out with his motorbike in the first edition of the race, then went into full training to come back as a racer the year after. Giannis followed me in the car for a while, taking pictures along the way. We’ll meet later this afternoon in Astros.

I continued running on this amazingly beautiful coastal road. I have cycled this road countless times – but its beauty doesn’t fade, it’s still as strikingly amazing as when I first rode it. Untouched by modern organised tourism.

I reached the city of Astros and turned towards the sea, to get to the town of Astros Paralio. I finished the run and headed for the sea, warm and so clear. This afternoon, friends from Athens are driving down here to meet me and we’ll spend the weekend together as tomorrow is a day off.
