Europe

Running by the largest natural lake of Greece and up the road to a quaint little mountain village

Today’s run took me on a flat terrain for the first 23km, around the side of Lake Trichonida, the largest natural lake in the country. That made for a very pleasant and easy going start of the day, especially as the air in the morning was also much cooler than ordinary.

As I got up the hill for the 12km road to Thermos, the air got more and more humid and I even ran through a little rain at some point – or rather a drizzle. The road was beautiful, passing by pretty villages along the way.

I got offered some water, some ice, and a chat: an old man passed me twice on his motorbike in the morning and was in disbelief that I should be running “pushing a child” up the hill. As I sat down for a break, and he was coming down the hill, he stopped by. I explained briefly the journey I was on. He probably thought I was nuttier than he initially thought. He left me with a bottle of water and left!

I am really enjoying being in Greece and making more connections with people along the way, thanks to the language barrier being removed. It does make an incredible difference in the experience of the road itself.
