Day 537 – US – Minnesota [Hastings to Red Wing]

23/09/21

38km

From Hastings (Minnesota) to Red Wing (Minnesota)

North America

Fabulous day on the trails of Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, south of the border with Wisconsin

The joy of running on empty gravel roads

I am now running in a south-east direction, following the path of the Mississippi River. The River marks the line that divides Wisconsin (north) to Minnesota (south). I will remain south of the river until my next rest day in LaCrosse.

Colours of Autumn

The first part of the run was on country roads, trails and gravel roads. Pure joy! I had been hoping to see glimpses of the river but ran through thick forests instead. On this second day of autumn I could already spot the changes in colours, it’s very subtle at the moment. But I keep dreaming of an Indian summer that would see me run through to New York in balmy temperatures and along beautiful scenery…

Red Wing Eishenhower bridge, linking Minnesota to Wisconsin

Red Wing is a nice little town set by the river. It was named after a Dakota Sioux Chief, and the city actually developed around its Indian Reservation. I took a long walk down to the Levee Park and got superb views of the bridge that goes across to Wisconsin. The Mississippi is wide and almost still here… nothing like the speed it gets further south when the water is high. It was tempting to walk across – but I shall wait until the journey takes me across, it will come in time, just in a few days…
