Day 501 – US – Montana [Miles City to Kinsey]

18/08/21

17.5km

From Miles City (Montana) to Kinsey (Montana)

North America

Second shortest day of the world run, on a cold and windy morning out of Miles City

These skies…

When planning the run out of Miles City, I was faced with two 60km+ segments between places I could stay. I decided I would cut the first segment in half (unequal segments) and get a ride back to Miles City for the night. Then I would tackle the next 60km+ segment as one, as I am also curious to venture into longer distances. I am trying to learn as much as I can now, to hopefully use my findings for the Australian crossing (and my question there is how to cut the long segments of desert between roadhouses/ gas stations – how many kms a day is “reasonable”). Anyhow, so the short day today is because I was not keen to step twice in a row into the new distance!

Amongst the rugged Badlands

I left late in the morning and it was surprisingly cold. It was below 15 Celsius as I left and I was quite delighted that I would not have to cope with the heat today. A cold front is coming over the region and from what the forecast says, I should not have to worry about heat for the next 10 days at least. And maybe if I am lucky I’ll also get some rain. That’s nice. In addition, the overnight rain and wind seem to have chased the smoke away. The air was clear to breathe at last.

“Take a right at the light, keep goin’ straight until night, and then, boy, you’re on your own”…

I ran on the frontage road which was empty this morning. To the sound of my footsteps only, I ran whilst the whole place was swept by the wind, pushing my (empty) stroller sideways. It has been a while since I have been challenged by conditions other than heat (and smoke!). I was glad for the wind. As I met the Interstate junction near Kinsey, I waited for Terri to pick me up. It’s the second time Terri is picking me up, having done so two days ago from Hathaway on approach to Miles City. I shall enjoy one more day in Miles City before going on a long stretch of road towards North Dakota…
