Day 401 – EU – Italy [Ancona to Fano]

10/05/21

50km

From Ancona (Italy) to Fano (Italy)

Europe

A longer run in the sun on the way to Fano, a pretty seaside town

Running on the Lungomare

A note about these past 7 days of running. They will average above 45km, where I am normally running 40km average (this was my target for the European crossing). But when I did my planning of the round of Italy I did a blunder in my Excel. I accidentally merged two rows and this resulted in two stages counting as 1. It would not have been a problem in normal circumstances except… except I have just booked my flying tickets from Trieste to Greece for the end of May. And there went my flexibility! My choice was either to have a heavier week of running. Or to cut a rest day. I chose the heavier week. And it’s going fine really!

Ponte Metauro at the entry of Fano

I followed National Road 16 mostly, with bits and pieces by the sea, on the “lungomare” as it is called. I did so because the weather forecasts are predicting the next seven days will be rainy. Therefore I thought today would probably be my last sunny day by the sea in Italy, of the whole world run. And I wanted to enjoy every last bit of it! Mind you as I am writing this blog, end of the afternoon, the sky’s still blue with not a cloud in sight…

Fano, canal by the Port

I was happy to arrive in Fano today. Yesterday’s Ancona was not too inspiring to me. It was a city I had visited in the past (for its ferry port to Greece) and I was not particularly thrilled to visit it again, a major portuary activity and refinery industry right on the sea… Fano on the other hand is lovely. Beautiful little fishing port, a fortified wall and castle, a magnificent bridge at the entry of the city. And I went for a stroll in the narrow cobblestones streets of the old town, really pleasant. I had a working lunch on the port, with pizza and beer on the menu, I could not be happier!
