From the seaside to the hills of Ancona, a quiet Sunday under bright blue sunny skies

Civitanova’s seaside promenade

I ran by the seaside out of Civitanova, a routine acquired over the past week. It’s very pleasant to share the paths with dog walkers, joggers, cyclists and early sunbathers. The sea is very tempting and I see here and there some people brave enough to go for a swim. But my attempts so far (to just dip my feet in) are inconclusive and I will have to wait a few more weeks before I get the courage to go for a swim.

Loreto’s Basilica

Halfway through the run I left the seaside to cut inland towards the hills of Ancona. For a while I ran towards Loreto, a beautiful little hill-town with its Basilica (della Santa Casa) visible from quite a distance. This is the particularity of this region. Behind the seaside populated coast are rolling hills, very green, sparsely populated, with a hill-town village every few kilometers. Always stone built and stunning.

The green hills of Ancona

And I received some good news today. It’s not the first time it happens and I am always very grateful. My hosts in San Benedetto contacted me to inform me they would not charge me for my stay as a gesture to support my journey. It has happened in Camposano too and a few other locations in Italy. Is it more frequent because I share more openly with my hosts – or because, given the context, my journey appears more extraordinary to some? Whichever it is, thank you for the generosity and the support, it brings a spring in my step!

[PS: having done no work yet towards re-calibrating my Garmin device, I am suprised that today’s elevation profile is correct relative to sea-level… the mystery of some technology!]
