Day 810 – Australia – NSW [Mittagong to Razorback]

28/08/22

47km

From Mittagong (New South Wales) to Razorback (New South Wales)

Australia

Long day in the sun, t-shirt and suntan lotion, it must be springtime!

Running on the Tourist Drive

The run started well with temperatures well above 10 Celsius (meaning t-shirt and sunscreen are back). Then I had another experience of Google Maps silliness! It sent me out of Aylmerton, where the Hume Motorway comes in, out on a shortcut towards the Old Hume Highway road. However that turned out to be a dead-end. I went over a fence and wandered around for a km or so before realising there really was no way in. I backtracked (GPS off as always when backtracking) and managed to climb a tree (!) that was stuck to the barbedwire fence to join the Hume Highway for a few kms. What an adventure!

I had my eyes wide open for them!

That added a few kilometers to a day that was already longer than I had done in quite a while! It was fine as the weather was particularly pleasant, I did not mind it so much. The profile of the run was also predominantly downhill, which helped, especially at the back of quite a few very hilly days! I am now down to 200m+ elevation and will reach sea-level tomorrow as I reach the suburbs of Sydney.

Blue skies, sunshine… spring is coming!

How exciting, really, to think of how far I have gone given the really extraordinary circumstances of the past few years. I realised this as I thought of my best friends in Singapore who have been in lockdown for most of my world-run, unable to leave the island. And they will settle in a new country on the very day my own journey is over. They have been literally stuck for 2 ½ years… whilst I have crossed 4 continents. Food for thought!
