15/08/22

44km

From Wodonga (Victoria) to Gerogery (New South Wales)

Australia

Running into New South Wales on a drizzly day, and a magpies’ attack

The bridge to New South Wales (NSW)

It was grey and drizzly as I set out this morning. In the first part of the run, I got to run across Wodonga and Albury. I was mostly on cycling paths, it was very nice and tranquil. I crossed the Murray River on a pedestrian path bridge and therefore did not see the materialisation of the border. But that bridge shows where I crossed.

Skies clearing up

After crossing Albury I was back on country roads then the quiet Gerogery Road heading north. The skies started clearing and it was warm and pleasant. Then something happened and I had my first magpies’ attack of the world-run. Two magpies perched on trees got agitated as I ran past and flew very low over my head, making several passes and almost touching my head with their wings. I did not expect them so early, magpies season often starts in September. They try to protect their nest and are especially defensive.

Funny sounding places

I had a second attack a little while later and there’s not much I can do but put my hands over my head in case they attack with their beaks. The run ended with a radio interview from SBS Canberra. The sun was out and I was almost done with the run. I’m looking forward to reaching Holbrook tomorrow.
