Day 767 – Australia – SA [Adelaide to Nairne]

16/07/22

39.5km

From Adelaide (South Australia) to Nairne (South Australia)

Australia

A hilly day with a lot of ascent, rain aplenty – a fantastic run in the hills

Watching out for the koalas

East of the city of Adelaide is the Mount Lofty Ranges, whose maximum elevation is around 936m. Not exceptionally high, but having run on flat ground since outside of Perth… it felt like a lot today! I went up to nearly 700m+ within the first 13km of the run, and it got me to think that the last hilly day I had was: in the Andes when crossing from Chile to Argentina. Quite a while back!

Up up up and away from Adelaide!

I enjoyed it very much, especially as I was getting higher and higher with amazing views of Adelaide. At some point, the trail I had chosen was so steep I was almost on my 4. Around me and attempting the climb was a dog walker with a very excitable puppy – who gave up after about 10 minutes.

Running through Hahndorf

The funny part today was crossing the village of Hahndorf, a very German village, courtesy of early german settlers. German food, music, architectural style – I fellt transported back in time and place for a while.

I was reminded recently, by a reader of this blog, about the history of women marathon runners. It’s only in 1966, 11 years before I was born (on 19th April) that Bobbi Gibb became the first female to run the Boston marathon. Dressed up as a man… because she was told by the race director that “women are not physiologically capable of running a marathon” – and he didnt want to take responsibility for that. One year later in 1967 Kathrine Swtizer was the 1st woman to “officially” run the Boston marathon. Would you believe that in 2022 some sports are still not accessible to women? As of today, it seems that only 5 women have ever been able to drive a Formula 1 (and zero since 1992). Maybe we are not “physiologically able” to drive one?!
