Running the 25,000th kilometre of the journey on a sunny day in the Nullarbor plains

A new milestone on the Nullarbor plains

Today I got to run past 25,000 kilometres. I thought about it as I was running, and how it should have marked the last month of my journey. The journey was initially set to be 26,232 km, the number of km required (by the WRA) for a run around the world. Covid hit whilst I was in Europe and I ended up running twice as many km as planned there. The total will likely be around 28,500km a result of this. Well, just another 3 months or so and I should be in Sydney!

Off road, never far from me!

Tonight we are staying at the Cocklebiddy roadhouse, in the caravan park. We will not meet a shop until we reach Eucla and the border village, in less than 300 km. Meanwhile we eat and drink our reserves, which are running low – and take our dinner at the roadhouse. Troy, the owner, really likes the eagles. Two of them, Bruce & Samantha, have been rescued after being hit by trucks. They are now in a big cage, and Troy takes care of them. Always sad to see animals in a cage, but I guess it’s better than them dying in the wild because they are unfit.

A rarity and favorite with the birds, a fruit tree

Tomorrow is a day off, coming after 9 consecutive days of running. I had initially planned to run all the way to Eucla without a rest day. But there is a Birds observatory near Cocklebiddy – and though we cannot get to spend a night there (because it requires a 4WD vehicle) James is keen to explore the area on his bike. I can’t say I disapprove of a rest day!
