Reaching the end of the longest straight road in Australia and a 45mn time zone change

Another rainbow day

I started the day under moody skies again. I don’t think I have ever seen so many full rainbows in such a short period of time as I have the last few days. The landscapes around were a bit varied. One moment it was all green and low vegetation and then next there would be some trees again. I saw some Galah parrots again which I had not seen or heard for weeks.

After 146.6km of straight road, a bend!

As I reached the Caiguna Roadhouse, I saw a bend. A bend! That means I had reached the end of Australia’s longest straight road of 90 miles (146.6km). I had not really minded it, like I said earlier, the slight ups and downs made it impossible to see the straight line ahead. It was not too bad. There I met Jean & Tiffany, a Swiss-Australian duo who had spent the last few days driving a motorhome back from Adelaide to Perth. So that’s what happens. As we drive our motorhome from Perth to Adelaide, people are paid to drive them back. A cool job to do, I would have loved the opportunity in my student days!

An unusuak time zone

Anyway. So I passed by the roadhouse and was on the road to the next roadhouse, that of Cocklebiddy. On the way there, I passed the Australian Central Western Time Zone which, strangely enough, is a 45mn difference. It’s the first time ever I have encountered a time zone that is not a multiple of 60mn. I searched the internet and learned there are a few around the world. Tonight we camp in Caiguna and we’ll be looking forward to moving to a new location tomorrow.
