South America

Ruta 7 grassy roadside, a white & black Tegu and mosquitos a plenty

The grassy roadside – and 505km to Buenos Aires

I waved goodbye to my nice trail. I had enjoyed running on it, away from the main road – but today I could only admit that it just ain’t there anymore. I resigned myself to running by the roadside – there is no shoulder on the road. That means I end up running on the grassy side, and most of the time, it really is hard work. I find myself switching sides of the road (though I normally never run against traffic) simply looking at where the grass is not greener, but shorter!

Black & White Tegu

Mosquitos have become really hard to deal with. Last night, they caused me to sleep very little (we didn’t have the anti mosquito plug with us). And whilst I run, they invade all my breaks. As I got up from my midway break today, I counted no less than 25 bites on my legs and arms. That’s an awful lot! My blood seems to be in high demand – it’s just quite annoying and they bite even as I run sometimes, they give me no respite.

Treats awaiting me at the finish

I got a very surprising and pleasant encounter today. I spotted in the distance, in the grass, a sort of lizard. It could not smell me as I ran with a headwind. I got as close as I could and took pictures and videos. It seemed rather curious, though it arched its back a bit which may indicate he was ready to attack. A truck drove past and it was out like the devil was running after it. Beautiful reptile, an Argentina native, mostly hunted for the leather trade. Not an endangered species apparently. I have been following its track and prints in the sand for quite a while, I am glad I got one on camera.
