Day 671 – South America – Argentina [Vicuna Mackenna to General Levalle]

From Vicuna Mackenna (Argentina) to General Levalle (Argentina)

South America

A grey run, rainy and cold, along the almost deserted Ruta 7

The weather here in Argentina is subject to very sudden changes. Not that I mind, I was prepared for a very hot summer – so I am quite happy when the weather turns rainy and colder. A welcome change.

I started out from Vicuna Mackenna running on a wide shoulder and I then tried to follow the parallel trail to the main road. Alas, the rain had rendered the terrain impracticable, flooded and muddy. I returned to the main road, the famous Ruta 7 and there was no shoulder. My alternative was to run on the grassy verge by the side of the road.

It was not too bad. Surprisingly for a weekday, there was almost no traffic. It was easy for me to run on the road and switch to the grassy road verge when I heard a vehicle on approach. Today was not a very inspiring run! One long straight run with nothing on the way.

Yesterday evening we enjoyed a great barbecue in Vicuna Mackenna. Our hotel boasted a nice garden and everyone seemed to be outside, playing music and enjoying the starry night. We offered some of our grilled chicken to our host, and he offered us a very nice bottle of wine in return. Great trade off! The problem we face here in the countryside, is that when we arrive in a town early afternoon, almost everything is closed. Shops and restaurants only open again around 9pm (8pm the earliest). It can be challenging to eat properly – hence why the barbecue is still often the best option.
