Day 814 – New Zealand – [Auckand “antipodal run”]

01/09/22

5km

From Auckland (NZ) to Auckland (NZ)

New Zealand

Final run of the journey, all criteria of the WRA now fulfilled – all counters stop

Standing one more time in my world-run uniform!

For the very last time today, late afternoon in Auckland New-Zealand, I switched on my SPOT satellite tracker, my 2 handheld GPS recorders – and I launched for a run. I had no intention to run a marathon, all I needed to do was simply run in Auckland.

This final run answers one of the criteria listed by the WRA (World Runners Association) to qualify a world-run. Here are the 10 rules established by WRA: https://worldrunnersassociation.org/the-wrc/ Rule number 7 entails that the runner must run “through antipodal points with a tolerance of 10 degrees of latitude and longitude”

The iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge in the distance

I used an internet tool to calculate my antipodal point with precision. I passed the city of Ronda in Spain on 28th December 2019. The antipodal point to Ronda Spain happens to be in Auckland at Murrays Bay. See the points here: https://www.geodatos.net/en/antipodes/spain/ronda

There’s only 20km between Murrays Bay (to the north) and Auckland where I ran today, which is well within the 10 degrees tolerance stipulated in the rules.

In my initial world-run plan, I had intented to run across NZ, from the southern tip of the south island to Auckland on the north island. Having crossed the 4 required contients already, and COVID having delayed me by about 8 months, I have now overstretched the resources (financial, not physical!) I had set aside for the journey. I will come back some time in the future to NZ to run across what I have missed.

Sea front promenade and the Auckland Ferry building

All counters (km and days) definitely stop tonight. I will miss my reporting routine I am sure, as much as the running. Sharing the journey everyday on this plateform has been an integral and enjoyable part of the journey. 814 blog posts have been published, not one has been missed!

I will publish a few blogs in the coming days and weeks, to keep up to date with what is happening in the media and especially, the celebrations in my hometown (Rouen Normandie) on Saturday 17th September – a celebratory running event which Serge Girard (world-runner #6) will also attend. Stay tuned for the news!

I will also publish an Excel Table summarizing all the data of this world-run which tallies back to my Garmin account lifetime total (My ID on Garmin is “Lootie Runner” and this is a public account).
