10/06/22

40km

From Eucla (15k west) (Western Australia) to Nullarbor Rdhse (172k west) (South Australia)

Australia

Running into a new state, Southern Australia (SA) on a cloudy and dry day by the ocean

Eucla Pass in the morning

I started the run with a view on the cliff (or buff) that lead to Eucla, only 15km away from my start point. The run was fairly quiet. And quite surprisingly a car slowed down by my side – a police car! I have not seen a police car since I left Perth 1,500km ago! The two policemen asked a few questions about my running and whether I had some support. They tooted their horn and then left. And came the “uphill”, the opposite of what I experienced at Madura Pass: 100m uphill to Eucla. It had been a while!

Into South Australia I run!

I ran past Eucla and straight to the Border Village. That’s why I saw some police, they have a checkpoint there. Vehicles entering Western Australia are systematically checked for fruits and meats. On the other hand, if you’re driving towards South Australia, no check at all. Strange. Anyway I ran through the checkpoint and the two policemen I met earlier were there, greeting me on my way.

Finish with a view!

I carried on and noticed immediately that on the SA side, the road is a lot narrower, with no hard shoulder. I elected to run on the soft shoulder instead. It’s a bit of an issue at the moment. More about it tomorrow, but my shoes are at the end of their lives, both outer edges completely gone… but it will take another 11 runs, to Ceduna, until I can get a new pair. I’m going to have to be careful with my running form. Rest day tomorrow, hurra! Maybe some whale sightings?
