A very cold and wet morning, shortened by the rain and the surprise of Madura Pass

With James’ rain jacket on, trying to warm up and run again!

In the first 10km of the day I encountered really bad weather. There’s no such thing as being cold, it’s all about not wearing appropriate clothing. Well it turns out my rain jacket, which has served me very dutifully for the past 2 ½ years, has had enough. It no longer is waterproof. I got completely drenched, all my clothes soaking wet and sticking to my skin, I was getting colder with every step.

Finally a ray of sun!

James had parked the motorhome at km 10. I jumped in and tried to warm up. Did not work. I changed all my clothes and got into dry ones. I could not warm up. So I stayed in the van, waiting for things to get better. An hour or so later, I hit the road again. I was still shivering – but the weather was a bit less foul. I decided to call it a day after 30km. Tomorrow will be a better day, and James has offered his own rain jacket – so at least I should be able to keep dry from now on.

The view from the Madura Pass – Nullarbor plain…

A surprise awaited me at Madura Pass. Amazing views and what? A downhill! I thought I was running on the flattest possible plains. Yet there was room for more. The Roe Plains were once the seabed 15 to 45 million years ago. I was also surprised by the trees and vegetation. Such a surprise, I was not expecting this on the Nullarbor crossing!
