Day 682 – South America – Argentina [Chacabuco to Rawson]

04/03/22

44.7km

From Chacabuco (Argentina) to Rawson (Argentina)

South America

A very humid, muddy and jungly day in Argentina’s country side

Before the mud

Out of Chacabuco, I ran about 8km on a country road before heading onto the trail dust road that follows the trail line. Except that, with the overnight rain, dust road soon turned into mud road! I did not mind much, except when it meant I was sliding all over the place. But most of the time (when it was not flooded) I could rely on the grassy verge to get some grip and run on.

James directing the operations to save the van!

About 12km into the run, I spot the Campervan in the distance… and James unloading the car. What? Well, the van had slid to the side of the trail (it’s not exactly a 4WD!) and James could not get traction to get it out. By the time I reached the van, another motorist had stopped (very lucky, as we would not meet anyone for the rest of the run!). Soon there were two very nice Argentinian men with 4WD pickup trucks helping us out of the ditch!

A pool at the hotel tonight? That would explain the wide smile!

I kept on running on the trail whilst James took the van to the main road to reach my finish point in Rawson. I ran through some more very muddy patches, a lot of nasty mosquitos there, all after my blood it seemed. It got very very humid, almost jungly as well, the vegetation was very dense in places. I was glad when I saw the van in the distance as I approached km45, it was beginning to be almost suffocating!
