South America

A sunny and hot run on the Ruta de los Conquistadores and very Mediterranean feel

The owls sculpture of Coelemu

Back on the road this morning, it is now much warmer in the morning – and it gets hot much sooner. The road was quiet. I ran through the village of Coelemu which was almost deserted in the morning. Then as I crossed the Itata River, I spotted a big bird of prey there. I thought maybe it could be a condor, the wingspan was very wide and I saw something like a white-ish collar. But maybe it’s just a vulture after all. I keep an eye out for condors, this is one of the sights that I was really looking forward to.

Eating figs off the tree

Today I noticed how everything is starting to feel very Mediterranean around me. Fields of olive trees near Coelemu, producing local olive oil. Vineyards with European grapes. Fig, cherry and apricot trees with ripe fruits ready to eat off the branch. Even the local villages have a southern european feel. James drove the Campervan to Quirihue in the morning and rode his bike back to meet me on the road, it was nice to enjoy some company.

With Fabien (left) and Ivan (right) at the winery

Tonight our host Ivan took us on a tour of the vineyard. We met with Fabien, the owner of the local “patriarchal” winery Mora Reyes. We got a full wine tasting: Moscatel, Chasselas, Semillon… locally produced champagne… what a treat! Of course we left with a few crates of the ones we liked – hopefully it will last us till the end of the South American crossing – or not!
