Day 611 – South America – Chile [Panguipulli to Gualapulli]

23/12/21

38.5km

From Panguipulli (Chile) to Gualapulli (Chile)

South America

A much cooler run, with stunning vistas on the Lake Calafquen and Villarica volcano

The usual grey morning skies

There seems to be a heatwave underway from which we are partially protected at the moment. The mornings are still pretty chilly, and it takes a few hours of daylight to really warm up. As we are heading north, it will get hotter and hotter. Today was a good day, with temperatures reaching only about 25 degrees Celsius.

Stunning views on Lake Calafquen

As I was running (slow running/ walking!) the major uphill of the day (taking me up to just below 600m+) I stopped by the Mirador Ancapulli (viewpoint) where James was waiting for me. What stunning views on Lake Calafquen, with the volcanos and high mountains in the background. We stayed there a while, taking in the views, photographing and enjoying local snacks too.

A well deserved break – keeping James’ bike company

I resumed the running and from this point on it was mostly downhill. The road was quiet, countryside, very peaceful. I stopped by the little village of Gualapulli – and we drove all the way to Villarica, where we will spend the next 3 nights. Tomorrow’s a running day, which will finish north-west of Villarica. Then the 25th is Xmas day and a rest day for us. Hopefully another swim in the lake (we swam yesterday in Lake Panguipulli, it was chilly and very enjoyable!).
