Day 609 – South America – Chile [Paillacos to Los Lagos]

21/12/21

40km

From Paillacos (Chile) to Los Lagos (Chile)

South America

Another sunny beautiful run in southern Chile – and some more local treats

Rio San Pedro near Los Robles

The run started much earlier than usual, nearly 9:30am. Very late for my standards! But to our credit we had a fair amount of driving to make it back to my start point. We are staying 2 days in a lovely « cabaña » near Los Lagos – the nearest place where we managed to find accommodation. It comes with such pleasure to be able to cook our own food, do a bbq and watch the full moon. Whilst completely isolated surrounded by fields, birds, cows and goats! Surely one of these things I would never have been able to experience had I been on my own.

Enjoying local food

Blue skies, quiet country roads of Chile

So I started in chilly weather again and as usual it got hot and sunny by about 11am. James met me halfway through and by km 25 we found a nice little roadside shack where to stop for a proper break. We enjoyed a platter of cheese empanadas, hand rolls, chatted with owner Barnabe, who seemed chuffed about meeting foreigners. We are definitely not in a touristy area.

Tomorrow we are heading to Panguipulli. Two days ago the town was in the news because of a police shooting of a street performer artist. This led to widespread unrest as reported by the BBC here: [https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-55972168]. I sure hope we’ll be able to enjoy the scenery and the lake – as well as the warmth of people. We have only good experiences so far, being welcomed and helped around. What a great country. I hope it stays this way!
