Day 602 – South America – Chile [Salto Grande to Puerto Varas (west of)]

14/12/21

33km

From Salto Grande (Chile) to Puerto Varas (Chile)

South America

A shorter run on rough terrain – into magnificent Puerto Varas by the Lake with view on the Volcano

The nicest part of today’s run

The day started again with a bit of commuting, back to my starting point near Salto Grande. We stayed in Puerto Montt for the night, enjoyed a very nice dinner by the fish market in Angelmo. Puerto Montt seems to be the gateway to Patagonia, with local ferries offering trips south to the wilder places. I know I would return there one day, I just could not fit Patagonia on the world-run. I guess you cannot see and do everything.

My breaks are becoming more interesting!

The run today was on a road under construction. I chose (for the second time only in the whole world-run) to run without the stroller. Since I now have the luxury not to have to carry all my gear, I chose to run with a Camelback, holding my water, GPS and satellite Spot tracker. A very different kind of running! I was glad, because the terrain was very rough, rutted, uneven, and it was a bit brutal for the legs (especially after a 18 days break!). I was also glad the run was shorter, I need more time to readjust to my standard marathon distances.

The joy of having a road companion. At km 14, James passed me by with the campervan and parked by the side. Chairs out in the sun, I sat there whilst he brewed me a cup of tea – and to go with, a toast with Marmite. How splendid! The world-run is definitely taking a turn for the better.

Osorno Volano, from Puerto Varas

Tonight we are staying by Lake Llanquihue, in Puerto Varas, a city of German tradition. It is quite stunning, with incredible views on the snow capped Osorno volcano standing tall at 2,652m. Such a lovely city… I wish we could spend more time there – but we are heading to Frutillar tomorrow, also on the Lake, and hopefully equally beautiful. We’ll spend more time in Frutillar, including a rest day.
