Day 595 – US – Pennsylvania/ New Jersey [Philadelphia to Trenton]

20/11/21

46km

From Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) to Trenton (New Jersey)

North America

From the center of Philadelphia, through the suburbs… and into the 13th state: New Jersey!

Benjamin Franklin bridge, Philadelphia Pennsylvania

What a beautiful treat as I left Philadelphia this morning… I ran alongside the Delaware River for a short while, and the sun was rising over the river and through the bridges. It was particularly spectacular over the Benjamin Franklin bridge. It was cold and I had to keep moving, I would have otherwise stayed there for a long while, watching it rise above the horizon.

Leaving the city centre

After a short run through the center, I was quickly again into the poorest neighborhoods. It is quite striking how neat the divides are, in these big American cities. I have not seen it this way in Europe. And as I only started running through big cities in the US very recently (September/October) this is something I am not quite yet accustomed to. There is a pattern and it is quite baffling. How city after city seem to follow the same model, how poverty is ghettoed into belts around the city itself.

Running on the trail on approach to Trenton NJ

I progressively moved into more residential areas and then, before I knew it, I was near Trenton, New Jersey, the 13th state of the North American journey. I have not yet crossed the bridge over the Delaware River that will officially send me into New Jersey… but I am only 500m from it and in the town of Trenton. Official crossing shall take place tomorrow at dawn!
