Day 541 – US – Minnesota/Wisconsin [Winona to LaCrosse]

27/09/21

45km

From Winona (Minnesota) to LaCrosse (Wisconsin)

North America

What a treat today, scenic route, warm weather and crossing into a new state: Wisconsin

Out of Winona MN on a foggy morning

I set out on a gravel road out of Winona this morning, as the sun rose above a foggy veil… the views were stunning, the skies above the foggy line very clear and blue… I was in for a treat again! I ran along the Mississippi River the whole way. I even switched from my usual “running with traffic” rule and went the other way, against traffic, to get all the sights. The river is so wide and quiet. I even spotted a couple of bald eagles. My pictures are not good because of the distance, but to the naked eye they were truly impressive and majestic.

With Glen, WKBT journalist

I reached the town of Dakota and veered onto the River path, out of the main road. Another treat as it was so quiet and beautiful. And as I passed Dresbach I was joined by a journalist from WKBT (Channel 8) – he shot various segments of my running then proceeded to a quick interview on the road side. What’s amazing is that 9 years ago in July, Tom Denniss (world-runner #3) was running that exact same route I’m running on today… and was interviewed by the very same news channel! (albeit a little further down the road at the entry into LaCrosse). Coincidences..! Read Tom’s Blog on that near-identical run 9 years ago: http://www.tomsnextstep.com/jul-1-2012/

The Big Blue Bridger – into LaCrosse WI

I reached LaCrosse via the beautiful Mississippi River Bridge. The bridge is a combination (as you can see in the picture) of the Cass Street Bridge & the Cameron Avenue Bridge – forming what’s called the Big Blue Bridges. The views were stunning, I even got to see an old steamer boat that was crossing the river as I ran through it. Tomorrow is a rest-day in LaCrosse and I will get to see all the sights under bright blue skies and warm weather… lucky me!

World’s Largest Six Pack!!

PS: I ran passed the “world’s largest 6-pack” as I entered LaCrosse via the City Brewery. The 6 huge cans boast to be able to provide one person a six pack of beer for 3,351 years… How many world-runs is that!! Truly impressive – and it brought back memories. I worked in the brewing industry (in Scotland) for 7 years as I started my career and the smell of the brewery became very familiar and pleasant to me. A trigger it was to run through the brewery today!
