Day 531 – US – Minnesota [Avon to St Cloud]

17/09/21

22km

From Avon (Minnesota) to St Cloud (Minnesota)

North America

A very short run towards St Cloud on sunny country roads

Not the kind of alerts I’d like to receive on the run!

Yesterday evening I received an alert on my phone. The Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) have been initiated in 2012 throughout the US to warn the population of various dangers. I have received three so far (for missing children and possible abduction). It is quite impressive when it goes off, an alarm rings and the screen flashes. Yesterday was a different one – and I pressed the wrong button, could not read it – went down to reception to find out there was a tornado coming our way!

Along the Wobegon Trail

Thankfully the tornado avoided Avon, but it rained all night and the almighty storm kept me up a good part of the night. I was glad the running would be short today, I slept later than usual. I ran the last few kilometers of the Wobegon Trail. I hope to find equally pleasant trails and country roads going east. This trail was undoubtedly some of my best running in the US so far.

With Bev and Rick

A friend from Singapore had put me in touch recently with Bev and Rick from the Minneapolis area. They contacted me today and picked me up from my hotel, took me downtown for a meal and a drink at a local pub. What a treat! Their generosity extends beyond as I am now also connected to their children who live in Minneapolis, which I will reach in 3 days. More company along the way! Bev and Rick also gifted me some homemade Belgium Waffles which are going to be perfect for my breakfast tomorrow…
