Cooler temperatures, smoke, company for a few kms and a new pair of shoes

By the Gallatin River early morning

Yesterday’s rain did a lot of good. For a start the temperatures were reasonable and that was much appreciated. Then it got a little bit humid in the early morning hours. And that too was a nice change from the brutal dry heat of the past few days. I was also looking forward to today’s run as I would get to run through two towns (Manhattan and Belgrade) where the last weeks’ runs were pretty much without any distraction all the way.

Awesome surprise from Crystal in Belgrade Montana

As I approached the town of Belgrade and sat down to read about it, I received a text from Crystal (a friend of Angela who ran with me 10 days ago). Crystal lives nearby, is a keen runner and wanted to run a few kilometers together. What a great surprise! Just as the smoke was settling in the valley, blocking the view from the magnificent Bridger Mountains range all around. How awesome to have company on the road. We managed about 7kms together, chatting along. As Crystal left me to attend family duties, I looked around and it was as if the mountains had disappeared. The smoke was so dense you couldn’t tell there were mountains.

Couldn’t run one more day in these worn out shoes!

Note about my shoes. I’ve run into 10 pairs of shoes as of now. Of the 10, 5 were the same model of Adidas SL 20. The previous pair went 2850km whereas the current one has to be chucked after only 2120km. It all has to do with the climate, as the current pair only ran summertime. The road is much hotter and before I discarded them, I took a picture. Little stones got embedded into the soles, which must have been from the day the tar was melting on the road. The sole was as thin as paper in places. I’m trying a new brand that I’ve never heard of before. Let’s see if they can beat the current record of the most kilometers!

I’m staying in Bozeman, the 4th largest city in Montana. It felt good to go downtown for a walk after the run, sit down for lunch and not have to eat a burger – and find a great sports shop with plenty of choices for my new pair of shoes. All in all, today was a great day! (minus the smoke).
