Day 481 – US – Montana [Garrison to Elliston]

North America

A fine day on the road and meeting people in the emptiness of Montana

With Arleen and Guy at the campground Garrison

Yesterday afternoon I met with Guy and Arleen (although known as the Sandpoint Lothians) at the campground. We chatted for hours, a very well traveled couple, fly fishing and driving their way across the US. It is so much more special to make connections in what I described yesterday as being a particularly empty and unpopulated state. Campgrounds are friendly in this way, it’s easier to make connections. And I seem to also sleep better than in motels!

Awesome time at the Avon Pie Shop

I received a message from Angela (who ran with me from Lozeau to Alberton last week). She checked my route and advised me to stop by a pie shop on the road side in Avon. At km22 I saw the said pie shop and went right in. I ordered a delicious lemon meringue pie and by the time it was on the table, I had half of the clients asking me questions! Very kind people who all came for a chat and a picture. Before I left the joint, I asked whoever was still around to come for a group selfie. What a great idea it was, Angela, to suggest I stop by!

The road to Elliston

Tonight I am staying in Elliston. There is not much there, a gas station, a convenience store and a motel – as well as the famous “Spotted Dog Saloon” which has very good burgers. The run today was good, it was nice to have the distraction of the pie shop coffee halfway through. I also was passed twice by Guy and Arleen’s car, and as always in isolated places, it feels good to meet familiar faces on the way.
