Day 443 – EU – Turkey [Corlu to Marmara Ereglisi]

21/06/21

30km

From Corlu (Turkey) to Marmara Ereglisi (Turkey)

Europe

From the city back to the seaside, by the sea of Marmara – Istanbul D-3!

Bright and sunny this morning

Yesterday’s rainy weather was quickly forgotten as I hit the road this morning. I left a bit later than usual knowing I had only about 30km to run, a change from the past few days at 50km! I followed the D100 to the town of Seymen heading east, then turned south towards the sea. It’s been a week since I last was by the seaside, in Alexandroupoli by the Aegean sea. So now it’s hello Marmara sea 🙂

Befriending some locals

There was a bit of a logistical hiccup as I arrived in Marmara Ereglisi. I reached the address provided by Booking.com and stopped my GPS. But the trouble was: there was no sign of a hotel nearby. I started playing with a cat and its four tiny kittens that just happened to be there. Their owners appeared on the doorstep. They only spoke Turkish. But somehow we understood each other, they called the hotel on my behalf and 15mn later a minivan came to collect me. The hotel is a few kilometers away and they were unable to tell me how to get there… That means tomorrow I’ll have to run back to the point where I stopped my GPS to restart the run.

Lunch by the Marmara Sea

I’m by the sea today, the sea of Marmara. This sea not only connects the Aegean sea to the Black sea, it also separates Europe and Asia at the Bosphorus strait. It really feels like I’m getting to the far end of Europe now. It’s D-3 until I reach Istanbul and I am very happy that the French Consulate in Istanbul is helping me make sure my arrival will be interesting and hopefully memorable. I think I won’t fully appreciate it until I am by the Bosphorus and can see Asia from across the strait with my own eyes!
