Day 412 – EU – Italy [Vicenza to Bassano del Grappa]

21/05/21

34km

From Vicenza (Italy) to Bassano del Grappa (Italy)

Europe

A straightforward run concluded with a beautiful entry to Bassano via the wooden covered “Ponte degli Alpini” on the Brenta river

Tranquilo, on the way to Bassano 🙂

Another very pleasant day on the road. I took my time, had plenty of breaks, and interacted with quite a few animals along the way. When I run longer distances (such as yesterday’s 51km) it is quite challenging to move to the next day. I tend to treat it as a very small run. And though today was indeed short, with only 34km on the clock, the way you approach it makes a difference. It seemed to me today’s run was longer than yesterday’s! It’s all in the head, how you see what’s ahead of you. If I don’t respect the distance, every kilometer of the way will feel that little bit longer than it should. I know it, yet I repeat the mistake every now and then.

Ponte degli Alpini, Bassano del Grappa

I entered Bassano del Grappa via a superb wooden covered bridge over the Brenta river. How graceful! With the Alpine summits in the background and the dense pine tree forest, the village looks like a little gem placed beautifully by the river. I took an afternoon stroll around the town, the Castle, the Cathedral, Piazza della Liberta, the river banks and mountains facing roads. A superb city rich in history. Napoleon Bonaparte spent some time here too.

Piazza della Liberta

Tomorrow I’ll run to Treviso. It feels like I’m just going from one stunning city to another. I had wanted to make up for lost time in Italy, as last year’s Covid interruption led me to cut short my Italian route. I now wanted to see as much of the country as I could and I am not disappointed. Tomorrow will also be 10 days running in a row and I am glad I’m getting a rest day. There is some frustration when not able to spend much time visiting these beautiful cities!
