A quiet rural run leading to yet another fabulous and stunning Italian city, Verona

Empty flat country road to Verona

Easy on the legs again. It is now about 8 days that I am running on completely flat roads. I knew it would be the case as I would reach the Po Valley. I don’t think it’s the best for running. Low rolling hills are better I think, for the variety they provide. They give the legs a rest from repeating the exact same movement, it mobilises different muscles. Anyway I am not complaining! I was just thinking about it on the run, and it is still very pleasant.

Verona Arena

I found some country roads to run on, no traffic, farms and small villages on the way, the way I like it. I was a bit concerned about the arrival into Verona, as it is a major metropolitan area, one of the biggest in Italy. But it went smoothly. I reached the city by the south gate, Puorto Nuova, and that was quite a magnificent entry, with roman architecture all around. I ran straight towards the Verona Arena, so beautifully preserved. It seems most of the town centre cobblestones streets are mostly pedestrians, what a great way to discover a place. I went from surprise to surprise.

Puorta Nuova

Verona is also a Unesco world heritage site. I walked all around the old town: piazza delle Erbe, Scaliber tombs, porta borsari, ponte della vittoria, the Cathedral… I would have needed a rest day to see all of it! This is also the city where Romeo & Juliet is set (though it’s unclear why, since Shakespeare apparently never went to Verona). A beautiful city of culture and architecture. Though I had reached the city under bright blue skies, it got a bit darker in the afternoon when I went for my stroll. There is some rain planned for the night – hopefully clear for tomorrow. My host today gifted me a bottle of local red wine, the ‘Corvina Verona”. I will keep it for my rest day, as tomorrow is a big run above 50 kms. I am being spoiled!
