Running to the medieval city of Ferrara, Unesco World Heritage, on a quiet rural run

Emilia-Romagna countryside

Setting out to run this morning, I remembered how every blog post I wrote last June when I crossed this region mentioned the flatlands. This is indeed the flattest part of the world-run so far. I am once again running across the Po Valley and there is not much in terms of hills or mountains! Tomorrow’s run is set to be by the banks of the river Po, which I will then cross to run further up north.

Central Piazza Ferrara

I had very little sleep last night. The room I had rented was in a part of the house close to the utilities room. The boiler, the freezer, the pipes… made a racket all night long and (pieced together) I just managed to get a few hours of sleep. This time if I didn’t wait for the alarm clock to wake me up, it’s simply because I was not asleep in the first place! It will need to be repaired with a solid sleep tonight, but meanwhile, it was difficult to keep my eyes open at all times.

Trattorias everywhere

I finished my run in the centre of Ferrara. A beautiful medieval city (Unesco World Heritage) featuring amazing architecture. I walked the narrow streets and there were “trattorias” everywhere with their terraces open and people eating outdoors. The Trieste Piazza with the city hall, the castle and the gothic cathedral. What a beauty of a city, and very well preserved too. I enjoyed some more delicious italian food – and more importantly, what my Grandmother called “le sirop de la rue” – the syrup/drug of the street..!
