Day 384 – EU – Italy [Savignano Irpino to Foggia]

47.5km

From Savignano Irpino (Italy) to Foggia (Italy)

Europe

A tired run, downhill most of the way, on an overcast and windy day

Leaving Savignano Irpino in the morning

Oh I did not get much sleep last night. There was an electrical malfunction at the place I stayed at and that meant I could not get any heating. I was blowing clouds (of vapour) as I was breathing in the tiny apartment. Knowing I am very sensitive to cold in normal circumstances, last night was especially hard for me. After the harsh past two runs and having been cold most of the day yesterday following rivers crossing and the constant rain… it was really hard not to be able to warm up properly. I slept very little, being constantly woken up by the cold. Brrrrr.

Towards Foggia under clouded skies

I was glad when it was time to leave and it was almost warmer outside than in the apartment. But I felt tired. The combination of having finished my run very late yesterday and being short on shut eye time. Anyhow. On I went. I knew it would be a long day, but I was hoping the downhill would make it a lot easier. In reality though, I struggled to find my running legs throughout the run. I was only hoping to make it to Foggia early enough to enjoy a full afternoon of rest.

The lush valleys of central Italy

The route took me down the mountainous part, through the valleys and fields of central Italy. It was a lonely road, very deserted. Everywhere around was green, beautiful and also semi engulfed in fog today. At one point I thought it almost looked like an entirely different country altogether. This is not the Italy I knew or imagined. It was vast, barely populated, green, wild… very surprising. And seeing how deserted it is, probably not many tourists (or even italians) know this part of the country. Right, time to put my feet up for the rest of the day!
