Europe

Glad to leave Castel Volturno, finding peace in the countryside again before a busy arrival in Naples

Back in the countryside towards Naples

I didn’t get much sleep last night. Every little noise I heard woke me up. To give some context, I was the only guest, alone in the B&B at Castel Volturno and every other house in the street was abandoned and derelict – like the whole town itself. I did not feel particularly safe, though I was indeed locked in the house. I was glad when the time to leave finally came.

Sighting Vesuvio on approach to Naples

I elected to go back inland and not follow the coastline to Naples, as it was quite a depressing sight. It turned out the countryside was a good choice. I was quickly back onto some quiet and beautiful places and was able to enjoy my surroundings again, mountains, endless fields and animals. As always when approaching a big city, I was aware that things would get busy inevitably. Last week to this day I reached Rome and I remember how tough it was.

Colours of Naples…

Well, Naples was no different in this sense. About 10km or so before reaching the city centre, traffic got mad. Sidewalks were inadequately suited for the stroller and I ended up running on the road mostly, generating plenty of angry honks (and a few encouragements too, let’s not forget these as they were very kind and appreciated). I didn’t get to see the city itself nor Vesuvio till the very last moment, at a turn of the road. And it was quite a sight! I am glad I have all of tomorrow to walk through the city and visit a place I have never seen before.
