Europe

Going further North alongside the Rhone river, with rain and cold & a sunny arrival in Vienne

On this second day on the road (following EU lockdown #2) I could feel yesterday’s efforts in my arms. This is something I have noticed at the start of the world run as well as after lockdown #1. It seems my running in a period of imposed break is sufficient to keep my legs in a good state. But my arms lose the fitness required to push a 30kg stroller along the way. It will take a few days to get back to normal.

I decided not to run along the Nationale 7 road today and avoid the company of traffic. I chose a series of secondary roads (“departementales”). Though there is no dedicated shoulder for cyclists on secondary roads, the near-absence of traffic makes the journey way safer – and that much more pleasant.

It was cold, foggy and drizzling as I left this morning. And the sky turned blue and sunny as I reached Vienne, it was beautiful. Vienne is a stunning city, set on the Rhone and Gere rivers. The very historic city counts a cathedral, a roman temple, a medieval castle and a gallo-roman theater. That was a lot to see and I briefly toured the city before I tackled the last segment of today’s run: up the Gravier Rouge hill, 160m elevation over less than 3km.

My host tonight is Marie-Francoise and she gave me a very warm welcome as I made my way up the hill. She has transformed the farm of her father and turned it into very modern and stunning rental accomodations. Perfect place for R&R ?
