Europe

A long day under the sun, on a hilly and scenic run towards Almiros

Yesterday’s long day in the beach town of Rachon was much needed. As is often the case in the smallest towns I stay in, the hospitality was superb: a big room and balcony overlooking the bay – my washing taken care of and all the amenities nearby. I had time to enjoy a sea swim, sit at the tavernas by the sea and discuss with my hosts. These little things gave the day the appearance of a rest day.

I left early morning for what would be a long day of running, with 48km and some uphills to go through. The day was hot because I was under the direct sun, with no shade to take cover. It’s early September and I already notice how the air is much cooler in the morning. The temperature does get down at night now and it makes a difference in the early hours.

As I ran down the Othrys mountain range towards the plains, I had awesome views on the Pagasetic Gulf – which looks like a Lake, as the Gulf is circular and its entry to the sea is “blocked” by Evia Island in the background (south). It was a beautiful vista from above and I enjoyed it throughout the downhill.

Tomorrow I am headed towards the main port on the Gulf, Volos. A great city which I have never visited before and am looking forward to discover.
