Europe

Last day of running in Croatia, reaching Superb Dubrovnik at the end of a 3 weeks stellar run down the Dalmatian coast

Today was my last day running along the Croatian coast. The journey since Rijeka, some 20 days ago, has been magnificent. This country is my biggest surprise yet in the World Run. I had not suspected I would be so taken aback by all the beauty of the environment and the kindness of its people.

I have stayed mostly at people’s place (room rentals) as opposed to hotels and I guess it made the difference. It gave way to more opportunities to exchange and discuss. It’s not something that purposely happened, it just was the case that in all the small villages I passed by on the coast, there simply were not hotels most of the time. And I highly recommend the experience.

It is quite fitting to conclude this Croatian crossing with a rest day in Dubrovnik, a World Heritage site. I will dedicate tomorrow to discovering the Old Town – I have been told the city has never seen so few tourists, to my delight, as I am not a big fan of crowds.

After the run ended I met with my older brother Matthieu, his wife Anne and their three children, Clement, Camille and Alice. It is a joyous occasion to meet family along the way. Our last time together was in Seville, for Christmas, where the whole family had gathered – it had been a while!
