Day 560 – US – Indiana [South Bend to Elkhart]

16/10/21

34km

From South Bend (Indiana) to Elkhart (Indiana)

North America

Moody skies, cold chilly wind, it’s autumn here in Indiana

Moody skies out of South Bend

The cold northerly wind was blowing softly as I left this morning, enough though to make me feel very chilly. Today’s road took me through the university campus of Notre Dame, very green and leafy suburbs. Then I veered off to Cleveland Road, which I was expecting to be fairly quiet – given there was a big interstate running parallel to it. But it was not to be.

Crossing the St Joseph River

I had a very narrow shoulder to run on. In fact there was no shoulder at all, the right side of the white lane was just gravel and dust, very rough. Quite unpractical with the stroller. In low traffic, this would not have been a problem, but the traffic just went heavier and heavier. I understood why a few kilometers up the road. There has apparently been an accident on the interstate, and traffic got diverted to the quiet country road.

Through the leafy green suburbs

So I switched to an even quieter road and the last part of the run was indeed quiet, as it should have been all the way. I’m again in a town where the hotels are all in the periphery. Without a vehicle handy, unfortunately, you don’t get to see much of the town. It’s a pity. I always try to get as close to the center as I can but there are some places (rural) where it is not always possible.
