Crossing into Illinois and meeting with Lisa Bliss’ Mum in downtown Beloit

Grey and dry day on quiet, empty country roads

The air was dry and cool this morning – a relief following the days of high humidity and stickiness of the past week. I started running, very alert about my hip, waiting to see if I would feel the tension and clicking I had felt yesterday. Well… I will never know if I was right to suspect it was all down to the extraordinary high humidity, but all the symptoms have disappeared today. And nothing came up throughout the run either. I consider myself out of trouble!

Pat and Walt greeting me in Beloit!

I was running towards Beloit with a target in mind: to be at the Rock River bridge downtown by 1pm. In my 1st week of running across the US, I met the extraordinary Lisa Bliss on her bike out of Ellensburg WA (blogs 461 & 462). We have kept in touch since our meeting back in July – and today she had informed me that I would pass near her mum’s hometown. Pat was waiting for me, with Walt, at the bridge with a homemade sign (which I keep preciously). We sat down on a bench and chatted away, even Facetiming Lisa who’s stuck at home in WA. How nice it feels to have people caring & greeting me along the way, part of a network that was nonexistent in a not so distant past! After 45mn of chatting, I started to get cold – and still had about 4kms to run. I said my goodbyes and on the road I went again… Happy and feeling in familiar territory somehow!

I crossed into Illinois just a few meters from my hotel. I have not seen the “Welcome to Illinois” road sign – which I will try and snap tomorrow on my way to Rockford.
