Day 547 – US – Wisconsin [Sauk City to Madison]

03/10/21

45km

From Sauk City (Wisconsin) to Madison (Wisconsin)

North America

Across the Wisconsin River, into the State Capital of Wisconsin: Madison

Crossing over the Wisconsin River

As I left Sauk City, I ran over the bridge on Phillips Boulevard over the Wisconsin River. A tributary of the Mississippi and the biggest river of the WI state, it looked very wide, misty and beautiful in what was yet another very humid start of the day. I followed the course of Highway 12 all the way to Madison. An overcast and humid day, but pleasant in many ways.

Sheltered run on the cycling paths of Wisconsin

Though I was by the Highway, I enjoyed the luxury of a cycling path most of the way. How nice and relaxing. For the first time in the US crossing, I saw an almost uninterrupted flow of cyclists, runners, rollerbladers.. It’s a Sunday, in proximity to a big city… But I have not experienced this on the continent so far. Suddenly it felt like I was not the odd one out. The guy on his rollerblades and ski poles dressed like a cross country skier in 30+ Celsius temperatures was definitely more odd than me!

Madison, State Capitol Building, WI

Tonight I decided to hit the town. Madison is a University town and it’s the season.. There were students out everywhere, music oozing out of every pub and club. It felt safe and festive. I walked around, enjoying all this freshers week energy. I sat down at a funky place, had a few G&T, made friends with my neighbors who happened to be students from SE Asia. We had a few drinks – then I had a “normal” (or festive?) dinner that did not involve steak or burger or pizza or sandwich. It felt like such a treat! Madison is a fine city with fantastic energy – and the beautiful Capitol building, guiding the foreign traveler when it’s lost at night, like a lighthouse in the city!
