A long and hot day in the mountains – the downhills didn’t make it any easier

I wish there had been a way to cut today’s run a bit shorter. But the shortest route across Italy from Pisa was through these mountains, and there are very few choices for accommodation. Especially in a post-Covid19 era.

Anyway I knew it would be a long day and I took it very easy. The first 9km, uphill all the way were long. I was lucky it was in a forested area of the mountain and I was shaded from the sun. Then started the gradual downhill that would last 39km.

Running downhill, when accompanied by a 30kg stroller isn’t particularly easy or relaxing! It takes a lot of efforts to control the stroller and pull it constantly. It also amends the running form and gets you to bend slightly backwards. In short, you get to use different sets of muscles… and mine were quite surprised to be called in today!

The mountain delivered in terms of landscapes. The road was winding, very green, followed the streams of various rivers. And passing by some very small and pretty villages along the way.

The next two days promise to be a little easier, as I leave the mountains behind to reach the mediterranean coast again (in Ravenna).
