Day 498 – US – Montana [Forsyth to Hathaway]

15/08/21

39km

From Forsyth (Montana) to Hathaway (Montana)

North America

Another straight line run into the Badlands – and smoke filling in the valley once again

Smokey morning skies

The sun was tiny and bright orange this morning and there was a veil over the sky. That means smoke. Fires are still burning in the area and it seems the wind was bringing it all over the valley again today. The air quality readings rated it “unhealthy”. It was somewhat acrid and heavy to breath. I don’t think I was much affected, except in the uphills. I noticed I was considerably slower up the hills today. And much more tired.

Veil of smoke over the sky

It’s a pity not to be able to fully appreciate the landscapes I am running through. This part of Montana is quite stunning. I am entering the Badlands and there will be more and more of it until I cross into North Dakota next week. But today everything was covered with smoke and barely visible in the distance. I encountered antelopes today, there was a group of 8 running by my side, in the prairies – and then they disappeared on the horizon, it was beautiful.

Smoke filled valley

I reached Hathaway at 11:30am and Terri was waiting for me (along with Sharon the photographer from the City Miles Stars paper). I had contacted Terri a while ago, she is the head of the local Chamber of Commerce. Going into Miles City and getting out of it, for the runner that I am, the distances were too big. I needed to cut in half the two stages in and out and get rides to ferry me forth and back. Terri picked up my email and enthusiastically offered to give a hand. Very generous again, in line with all the generosity I am encountering lately.

With Terri in Miles City

That means I am sleeping in Miles City tonight. And I will get a ride back to Hathaway tomorrow morning, so I can restart my run exactly where I left it.
