Day 497 – US – Montana [Hysham to Forsyth]

14/08/21

44km

From Hysham (Montana) to Forsyth (Montana)

North America

Another run in the Yellowstone Valley, ever changing, isolated and beautiful – and awesome welcome by the locals

The wide open road…

It was really nice to enjoy the homestay at Jessie’s yesterday in Hysham. I got to meet her husband Chad and the tallest 2 year old child I had ever seen in my life, their baby boy Jack – a force of nature and a very sweet soul! We talked through the evening and I enjoyed a good night of sleep which, for once, was not disturbed by the proximity to the Interstate or the train line. I even heard the birds singing when I woke up.

The “Boots” Fence

I left in the morning on a 44km (almost) straight line to Forsyth. I did not meet any village or town along the way, but every now and then, a farm by the side of the road. I must have crossed paths with less than 30 cars today – every single one of them either waved at me or slowed down to ask if I was alright, if I needed water or a ride. I guess the isolation of the place drives the locals to be very supportive of each other and look after one another. I also met a very interesting fence along the road called “The Boots”! Tonight at the saloon locals explained to me the boots were placed in honour of the ranchers from years gone by who made it possible to have cattle and crops in the region.

Paula, Jerome, Jesse, Lootie, Gary, Angie – “The Jospeh” Forsyth

I arrived in Hysham and took a nice nap at the local motel. I then headed out to “The Joseph”. When I was in Custer two days ago, Denny, the owner of the Junction Inn burger joint, called his connections in the region. As a result “The Joseph” in Forsyth was awaiting me, ready with a free lunch and beers! How nice is that? I spent the later part of the afternoon there, enjoying a nice lunch and chatting with locals at the bar. I met with Gary the bartender who doubles up as a handyman as the motel I stay in. Jesse, Paula and Angie the awesome dart players and Jerome the long distance runner. I had some of the best time here with all the folks and got to chat with nearly everyone at the bar (which must have been the whole town too!). What a wonderful day on the road again… lucky me.
