Europe

A silly-me moment, amazing views of Monte Cimone and crossing into Tuscany

Rocchetta Mattei Fortress

I woke up this morning feeling concerned and irritated. It’s the second morning in a row (and the only 2 of the whole journey so far) where I am being woken up by the alarm clock and feeling like I need some more sleep. How is that possible? I wake up by myself around 30mn before the set alarm every single day, always. I wondered if I was sick, something was definitely amiss. Morning routine, I read the news. And something caught my eye. Damn. How did I miss that! Two nights ago Europe went on daylight savings time. Meaning the clocks went 1hr ahead. No one had warned me and I had blatantly skipped the news! I felt slightly better about my condition though… Silly silly me…

Mount Cimone at 2,165m

It had been a long time since I had an uphill run. Today was such a day with a gradual uphill cumulating 700m+ elevation through the 46km run. Nothing brutal but it was constant. I took it as easy as I could. The road was very quiet, similar to yesterday, forestry and sinuous. In the distance I could see the highest summit of the northern Apennines, Monte Cimone still covered in snow at 2,165m height.

Into Tuscany I ran!

I ran into Tuscany today. It’s a region I crossed west to east last summer when I restarted the world run from Pisa (after the 1st lockdown). I am now crossing it north to south (I should cross the road I ran last summer on the way from Pisa to Fucecchio in two days time). I am being very warmly welcomed today by my host again. I have much less human connections in Italy (since there is a lockdown after all) than in the countries I previously crossed. But it is always a very warm welcome when my hosts come out to greet me.
