Day 358 – EU – Italy [Bologna to Vergato]

28/03/21

34.5km

From Bologna (Italy) to Vergato (Italy)

Europe

Along the Reno river towards the Apennines on a warm sunny day

Bridge over the Reno river

Leaving Bologna behind early this morning, I ended up on a sinuous forested road by the Reno river. I am now heading towards the west coast of Italy (Livorno, south of Pisa) and will be cutting through a mountainous region (lower than the Alps). The Reno river, which I will also follow tomorrow, separates Tuscany (south) and Emilia-Romagna (north).

Tribute to Marconi

I ran past the city of Sasso Marconi, named after the inventor of the radio (Guglielmo Marconi) who received the first transatlantic signal in 1902. He went on to win a Nobel prize for his inventions and the town where he lived was renamed after him. There were many sculptures and tributes in his honour.

Cristina, my host in Vergato

My host today is Cristina, whose B&B is just outside of Vergato. I was very warmly welcome in a truly ancient italian style house. It is Sunday and shops are closed but Cristina made sure there were pasta and parmigiano for me in the fridge as well as biscuits and other treats. There is even a bicycle for me if I want to go around – but I may want to stay off the bike and put my feet up instead!
