Day 295 – EU – Belgium [Huy to Liege]

24/01/21

34km

From Huy (Belgium) to Liege (Belgium)

Europe

Along the Meuse River running on snow around and arriving in Liege via the magnificent Fragnee Bridge

It snowed all through the night. I took a picture before going to bed yesterday and as I woke up this morning, it just stopped snowing. The good thing is that temperatures were really not that cold and therefore the snow did not stay on the ground. It was just zero Celsius as I left this morning, chilly but bearable.

I set out to run on one more of the “ravel” routes, the network of cycling roads around the Walloon region. Though I had planned to follow the path of the river Meuse from Huy to Liege, I had to get off the path halfway through due to some roadworks. In effect I ran through the industrial backbone of the region, which I had already started seeing since my entry in Belgium via Mons.

As I arrived in Liege I was greeted by the “Ponts des Anges” or Fragnee Bridge, a beautiful bridge that was built for the Universal Exposition back in 1904. It is quite an imposing and magnificent view as you enter the city from the east.

Today is the first time that I am not able to get to my accommodation straight away. I had to wait about 2 hours for the apartment to be ready. In normal times I would have been happy sitting in a cafe or restaurant and writing my blog etc… With almost every shop closed, I ended up eating my lunch at the laundromat, doing my laundry and trying to stay warm until I could make it to a warm place! If I had known, I probably would have slept two hours more and hit the road later!
