Day 775 – Australia – SA/VIC [Frances to Peronne]

24/07/22

36km

From Frances (South Australia) to Peronne (Victoria)

Australia

Into the State of Victoria, a nice day on the road cut short by tiredness

On Straight Rd today

Clear skies this morning. I started running towards Frances (my run yesterday stopped about 8km short of it). Then onto the country road I went. I felt quite rough, the night has not been so good and I did not get as much sleep as I needed.

Hiding in tall grass, the injured sheep

About halfway through the run, I spotted a sheep by the side of the road. I looked around, there were no other animals. He was on the wrong side of the fence. I approached and saw that one of his hind legs was injured. He was hopping around in circles, obviously distressed. I called WIRES the emergency number for wildlife emergencies. First the number I had did not cover the state of Victoria. Then the number I was given only dealt with native animals – not cattle. There seemed to be nothing I could do for this poor animal.

Minimay, 10 souls, 1 grocery store

I kept on running and 10km later met one of the local farmers. I informed her about the exact location of the sheep and she assured me she would look into it. I hope they get to reach it. Anyway, I kept going and the terrain was quite muddy, making it quite hard to run for a few kilometers. I got very tired and decided to call the day short. It’s not that often that such things happen lately, it was the good call to make.
