Australia

A glorious day on the road, sunshine, blue skies and no wind! Now on to a rest day

Emus and Flinders Ranges at the back

With the Flinders Ranges in plain sight I started the run with a wide smile: blue skies, sunshine and… no wind! At last the bitterly cold wind had ceased to blow overnight. What a relief and it felt so warm. Having mountains to look at makes such a difference. I have been running on flat grounds since Perth. Flinders Ranges are the largest mountains in South Australia and named after explorer Matthew Flinders, a contemporary of Edward John Eyre.

Direction board, Port Augusta

I ran away from the Eyre Highway, on Caroona Road, all the way to Port Augusta. Quiet country road surrounded by fields. I spotted kangaroos bouncing around in the distance as well as some emus. I entered Port Augusta, crossed the bridge over Spencer Gulf and headed south towards Adelaide. Another week of running ahead of me before I get to reach the capital city of the State. Exciting!

The Sturt Desert Pea, SA wildflower

I saw for the first time the “Sturt Desert Pea” which is the floral emblem of South Australia. A beautiful wildflower, red and black with a unique shape. Tomorrow is a rest day and there is a high chance we’ll go visit the botanics gardens – more about it tomorrow!
