Day 700 – Australia – WA [Southern Cross (10km west of) to Yellowdine Roadhouse]

10/05/22

39km

From Southern Cross (10km west of) (Western Australia) to Yellowdine Roadhouse (Western Australia)

Australia

A cooler more pleasant day on the road, mix of trail and road – and the 1st roadhouse of the trip

Overcast morning on the pipeline trail

Today was a bit overcast, making for a much more pleasant run. Temperature still reached 30 Celsius by the end of the run but the slight side wind made it really ok. I followed the pipeline up to Southern Cross, then around towards Ghooli – and then I was on the highway. A little more traffic than I was expecting, but I sense it will slow down after Kalgoorlie.

How many flies on my hat?

I left with a little bit of cash in my backpack, which I thought would cover my snacks break at Southern Cross petrol station. With 1 small bottle of Fanta, 1 small water and 1 small packet of cashews I was in for 18$ ! Quite expensive really. Since we have started Australia, I notice that the daily spend is well in excess of what it was on the 3 previous continents – sometimes way over double the amount. Food is certainly expensive and so is accommodation. We will certainly save a bit by staying in the Campervan.

French “chic” – outback version!

Tonight we stay at the Yellowdine Roadhouse. Back 9 years when world-runner Tom Dennis ran through the area, it boasted a little motel. Well, not anymore! We are allowed to park our Campervan outside but there is no power plug nor water connection. We are on our reserves for the next 4 nights until we reach Coolgardie (160km, 4 straight runs of 40 km). Meanwhile, the daily work (site update, blog, Strava, Garmin, Relive and Facebook inputs) is done outdoors with a headnet over my head! Quite a different way of doing things.
