A tough day on the road, meeting cyclists and reaching a historic goldmine town

Past Moorine Rock

Today was a tough day as I felt tiredness all along, for (what I thought was) no reason. In hindsight, I had things playing on my mind. My phone ran out of data this morning just before I started the run. This means I was out of maps and other means of communication (other than txt messages). I was not too happy about it, especially as we are about to cross long segments of road with nothing on the way. I tried to resolve the problem on the way, calling various customer services and experiencing some aggravation along the way as you do! I finally got this issue sorted after the run.

Met by the riders of the Pipeline Challenge

Throughout the early hours of the day I met a steady flow of cyclists and support vehicles going the opposite direction (towards Perth). At some point I met a group that were stationary (changing riders) and we chatted a little. These amateur cyclists are part of the “Pipeline Challenge” race on a 5 days’ adventure “from the red dirt of the Goldfields to the green of the Perth Hills”. They even gifted me some bags of sweets – and though I normally don’t eat on the run, it was quite a welcome treat to have some jelly beans and other sweets.

Near Hunts Soak, Southern Cross

Today I stopped short of Southern Cross. The town is named after the constellation which is thought to have led to the discovery of gold. This was the first major gold discovery, well before Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (which I will cross in a few days time). We are staying tonight in a 1911 hotel (renovated since of course) very colonial in style in the pristine town of Southern Cross. There is not much on the way between Southern Cross and Coolgardie, so we expect to be spending the next 4 nights by the side of the road on rest areas!
