The end of Goldfields Rd, the rabbit fence and the pipeline trail

With a headnet against the flies – a nature run today!

I ran on the last segment of Goldfields Road this morning, as it stopped in Carrabin WA. From this point on I carried on running off the Highway, on the trail following the pipeline. Equally quiet and nature-set, I enjoyed the transition. There was not much wind today, for a change. Meaning there were little flies everywhere, even as I was running. I wore my net for a while – it’s not too bad, it doesn’t impair my vision nor my breathing, it’s easy and really does the job of keeping the annoying flies off my ears, nose, eyes and mouth!

The famous rabbit fence

It’s interesting that yesterday I mentioned seeing rabbits and remembered watching something as a child about the rabbits issue in Australia. Well today around km10 or so I passed by the #1 Rabbit proof fence! I read the story of the introduction of rabbits in 1859 in the eastern states, its subsequent going out of control, across the Nullarbor and into Western Australia. And the measures (mainly the fence) that had to be built. The longest fence in the world! 2,000 km long!!

Kangaroos tracks

I am often reminded how lucky I am to be accompanied for the crossing of Western Australia. Today for instance, I would have had to set camp by the side of the road (or pipeline) on my own if I had no support. The next big town is Southern Cross, which I will reach tomorrow. And after I finished my run today, we had to drive about 25km to the little isolated motel of Moorine Rock. It’s definitely getting less and less populated…

The last picture in the gallery depicts the footsteps of a kangaroo! I was looking down while running, amazed as I had never followed Kangaroos’s steps before.
